Deacon Team

James Aman

James was born in 1961, in a suburb of Philadelphia. When James was a teenager he became involved in a group called FOCUS that ministered to kids in private schools, and for several years he investigated the claims of Christianity. At the age of 18, he was convicted by the Holy Spirit of specific sins, and asked Christ to forgive him and save him. James went to college in St. Louis, MO and got a degree in Meteorology. While in college, he met his future wife, Nancy, while on a FOCUS ski trip. James and Nancy got married in 1990. In 1995, he felt led to move back to the East Coast to be closer to their parents. They moved to Gaithersburg and started attending Derwood with his growing family. James and Nancy have three adult children: Josh, Tim, and Beth. James serves in the Helping Hands ministry and is a Hall Monitor for Awana. James and Nancy help lead the Career Singles Care Group, and together they serve in the Two Year Old Nursery class. Nancy is one of the leaders of the Care and Comfort Ministry.

Kurt Berglund

Kurt was born and raised in the Philippines. His family’s moves between Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines exposed him to many different cultures and belief systems, shaping his early awareness of faith and a higher power.

He migrated to the United States in 2004. In 2012, he came to know Jesus personally and began focusing more on the hope and truth he found in Christ. In 2014, he married his wife Karen, who also grew up in a Catholic background, and together they were baptized in 2019. They began attending a Christian church in 2015 and have since been blessed with two daughters, Keira and Kaia.

In 2023, their family began attending Derwood Bible Church, where they found a welcoming community and a place to grow spiritually. He works as an IT Specialist and has served in both the Worship Team and the Tech Ministry. As he steps into the role of deacon, he looks forward to serving the DBC family, supporting the leadership, and helping strengthen the ministry as God continues to guide his life.

David Hoffsis

Dave came to faith after meeting his wife Linda as a freshman at Gettysburg College. Linda was active in Young Life in high school and introduced Dave to FCA at Gettysburg. Dave and Linda dated all 4 years at Gettysburg and married after Dave completed Marine Corps Officer Candidate School in 1982. Dave and Linda have been married for 44 years, and they have two adult daughters and 4 grandchildren all of whom know Christ as their Savior. Dave and Linda live in Rockville and have been attending DBC since 2024.

Steve March

Steve grew up in Minnesota and came to faith in Jesus Christ as a child. He studied civil engineering in college but, soon after graduating, began to teach high school math and science. After getting married to Emily, they lived for five years in China where they started a family and were actively involved in ministry through the public church while Steve continued to teach high school. God used those years to shape Steve’s conviction that professional skills are instruments of kingdom service. The March family returned to the United States in 2015 and found their home at Derwood Bible Church. Since then, Steve has been involved in many ministries of the church. He and Emily have led trips to El Salvador and are an approved foster family. In 2020, Steve returned to his civil engineering roots and now works as a construction project manager overseeing large-scale commercial development in the DC area. Steve has a heart for seeing people connect biblical principles to everyday life — in their finances, their families, and their work. He is grateful for the opportunity to serve the body at DBC and looks forward to supporting the church family in practical and meaningful ways as a deacon.

Victor Ng

Victor was born in New York City and was saved at the age of sixteen. He attended Evangel College, a four-year Christian School, and then went on to Penn State University where he was active in Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. Upon moving to Bethesda MD, Victor attended Fourth Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday School and was on the Retreat Committee. He met his wife, Deborah, at Fourth and they were married in 1991. They began attending Derwood Bible Church in 2019. Victor and Deborah enjoy spending time with their son Adam and daughter-in-law Ashleigh as well as their first grandchild, Austin.

Harry Oakes IV

Harry was born and raised in Montgomery County, Maryland, attending Derwood Bible Church from childhood. He put his faith in Jesus Christ at an early age. Having grown up in the church, he developed a strong foundation of faith within the DBC community. He works as a video producer and has served on DBC's tech team. As he steps into the role of deacon, Harry looks forward to working alongside the other deacons to learn how to best serve the church body and support the ministry at Derwood Bible Church.

Jeff Osborn

Jeff was born on May 31, 1956 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He grew up in Narragansett, RI after moving there with his family when he was 1 year old. He was raised in the Catholic Church but he was no longer attending by the time he went to college. He first heard the gospel in college from a Navigators staff member but initially did not receive Christ. Another Navs member, Erika, encouraged him to read scripture and pursue God, which he did. He eventually received Christ as his Savior in 1980 and married Erika two years later. They have 4 kids who are all believers and all married believing spouses. They currently have 11 grandchildren, several of which have professed faith in Jesus Christ. Jeff retired from AT&T after 28 years and is now semi-retired from JHU Applied Physics Lab, working there for the past 14 years. He and his family began attending Derwood Bible Church in 1991 after their move to Olney from Freehold, NJ. He has served on both the elder and deacon teams alternatively since 1995 with some sabbatical years in between.

Jim Sellevaag

Jim was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut but moved to southern New Jersey when he was three months old. He was saved at an early age and attended church and youth groups all the way through college. Jim attended Northeastern University in Boston and was involved in the ministry of Campus Crusade during his time there. He met his wife Kelly through the ministry, and they have been together ever since.

Jim and Kelly moved to Maryland after college and have been involved in ministry at multiple churches within the area. They came to Derwood in 2016 and enjoy serving in various areas of church life. Jim is excited about his role as a deacon and looks forward to serving the body of Christ!

Michael Scale

I was born and raised in Freetown, Sierra Leone and I gave my life to Christ in the 1990s. I started growing in my walk in the year 2000 during my stay in the Gambia where I served at Flaming Bible Church. I returned two years and a few months later to Freetown, to the headquarters of this same ministry where I served until 2020. There I met Victoria and got married in 2009, blessed with three kids then, Dionne, Israel and Arielle. Fast forward we move to the US in January of 2020 and not too long after we were blessed with Ethan.
