Forgiveness can be very difficult and something we may not want to do, yet Scripture presents it as a central mark of life in Christ. In this Sunday’s sermon passage, we will consider Jesus’ parable of the unforgiving servant and examine how withholding forgiveness places us in a prison of our own making, while releasing others entrusts justice to God. Nestled within this warning is a gracious invitation: those who have been forgiven much are called to walk in the freedom Christ has secured for them.

Unlike the Inn, there's room in the tomb because Jesus quickly vacated! Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, and He did so by shedding His precious blood. The church has a living Head, not a dead Savior. On Sunday we will celebrate our resurrected and ascended Lord, as we marvel at the baby in the manger.

Peter reminds us that though the scoffers scoff, Christ will indeed return and with that, God's judgement will be unleashed in the most catastrophic manner. In conjunction with this, our long awaited redemption will be realized as we will enjoy the new heavens and new earth. Peter is a faithful elder, shepherding believers in these compelling realities.

Peter reinforces our need to be sober minded. Scoffers will come, mocking the notion of Jesus' coming. In doing so, they deliberately overlook the fact that God has already judged the world in the great flood, and will do it again with fire.

Peter continues his description of false teachers as they lead many astray from the truth. Their chaotic inner turmoil is exposed, as well as their pending judgement.

In the previous message, we saw that false prophets and teachers will be judged. Now Peter goes into detail about how these false teachers operate - while acting like a brother or sister in Christ within the local church. We have to be aware that there are wolves in sheep's clothing. Perhaps the greater danger is wandering from the truth of God's word and slowly becoming desensitized to the lies and even embracing them over time.

Do we think God's judgement on false teachers is idle or asleep? Is the Day of Judgement a man made myth? Consider the fallen angels, Noah's contemporaries, and Sodom and Gomorrah.
Peter's treatment of false teachers and judgement is both jarring and extensive. Nestled in this passage is a precious promise for saints: the Lord knows how to save the righteous.

Having affirmed the truth and the straightedge of truth, Peter now moves to his primary theme: false teachers. We must know the truth from error and how to arrive on the side of the truth. The concept of absolute truth is a hard one for this generation, and therefore crucial to address.

Peter informs our understanding of the inspiration and authority of God's Word, in a detailed yet concise way. It is a powerful apologetic pairs well with the statement in Hebrews, the Word of God is living and active.

Peter employed strong language when describing gospel application in daily life. Before moving on, in our sermon passage he reiterates the centrality of the gospel and preeminence of Christ in the context of his pending impending martyrdom.

Peter exhorts us to intentionally develop seven qualities, he now addresses the one who lacks these qualities. We are exhorted to confirm our calling and election with the end goal of a rich entrance into Christ's eternal kingdom. The choice before us: a rich entrance as the Lord intends or a Chrisitan walk that could be characterized as poor or weak.

Inspired by our sermon passage, my abiding prayer for our six kids is that they would know Christ and not be ineffective or unfruitful in their relationship with Him. Against the backdrop of eternity, Peter reveals the path to Christian maturity and confident Christian living.
